The book I'm reading now:

(Because there is literary life outside of fan fiction...)

The Picture of Dorian Gray, by: Oscar Wilde

I read this in high school, but that was a long time ago, and when I came across it at B&N, I figured, why not. I vaguely remember enjoying it when I was 16.

Plus there's something to be said for reading British Fiction. It's just... different. It's a nice change of pace every once in a while.

Quotes to Live By

"Dance is the hidden language of the soul." -Martha Graham

"Your life story would not make a good book. Don't even try." -Fran Lebowitz

Tilda's character to Leo's character in The Beach: "Get some sleep. I may wish to have sex again before breakfast."

"Don't use words too big for the subject. Don't say 'indefinitely' when you mean 'very'; otherwise you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite." -C.S. Lewis

"I like my money right where I can see it... Hanging in my closet." -Carrie Bradshaw, Sex and the City

A Step onto the Soap Box

I've been going back and forth about whether or not I'd post something here about the ugliness that is going on at The Canvas. But the fact remains, TC was my home for quite some time and what has happened there in the past few weeks has affected me, and it's hard for me to stay silent.

The issue has gone beyond the claim of ownership. Had it remained only an issue of ownership, I would have stayed out of it because (while I do have my opinions on who the owners of TC are/should be) that is an issue that needs to be addressed by Casey, Koko, Brooke, and yuku.

Unfortunately, this no longer remained just about the ownership issue and it is because of that reason that I must speak my peace.

I no longer post at The Canvas. Anger fueled my declaration to no longer to post my fiction there, and indignation made it easy for me to delete my membership from a board I no longer recognized.

And now, I'm saddened.

I'm saddened by the loss of a place I called home for eight years. While I left, more than once, I have always returned and always felt welcomed back.

I'm saddened by the unrecognizable change that has happened to that board. Gone are the days when Liason fueled discussion, which led to conversation, which led to friendships.

I'm saddened for the new Liason fans at TC - those who will never get to know those of us who have left. People who will never laugh with Huma, or look at Tigg's beautiful art, or read Susan's fiction, or get into Jason's head via Dana.

I'm saddened by the loss of the voices of so many. Years ago, I helped Caryn with a little project called the Canvas Awards. Awards not to celebrate Liason, but to celebrate US - awards to celebrate the individual members of TC who made that place such a thriving community. They were awards created by Canvas Stretchers, voted for by Canvas Stretchers, and won by Canvas Stretchers.

One of the categories was for Board Rabble-rouser. If that's not a sign of how much things have changed, then I don't know what is. In those days, we celebrated a rabble-rouser. We gave an award to a member who disagreed and instigated because they ultimately started discussions, often the discussions we remembered the most. We celebrated someone who chose not only to have a different view point, but voice it as well. How many people would even recognize a board rabble-rouser if they saw one at TC these days?!

What I am most saddened by is the loss of history. That board didn't just contained the history of Liason, but it contained my history. And your history. And the history of any member who contributed to the community with a post. I grew up at the Canvas. I met lifelong friends at The Canvas. I celebrated birthdays and graduations at The Canvas.

I became a writer at The Canvas.

I applaud the authors who no longer post at TC, because the idea of posting creative writing at a place so quick to unjustly censor its members rubs me the wrong way. I understand the desire for authors to have their works taken out of the archives because I would have done the same thing had my writing ever been archived there.

But at the same time, it saddens me, because we are losing so many good stories. Authors are bravely taking down their stories, even if they do not have an alternate home for them.

So to any author who needs a home, PM me and I will help you find one. So many of us have lost TC already, and even if a resolution is found, things will never be the same again… And I don't want to lose any more than we already have.

Sometimes, there are more important things going on than Lord Byron....

The peculiar evil of silencing the expression of an opinion is, that it is robbing the human race; posterity as well as the existing generation; those who dissent from the opinion, still more than those who hold it. If the opinion is right, they are deprived of the opportunity of exchanging error for truth: if wrong, they lose, what is almost as great a benefit, the clearer perception and livelier impression of truth, produced by its collison with error.
-John Stuart Mill, On Liberty, 1859

We can never be sure that the opinion we are endeavoring to stifle is a false opinion; and if we were sure, stifling it would be an evil still.
-John Stuart Mill, On Liberty, 1859

But words are things, and a small drop of ink,
Falling, like dew, upon a thought, produces
That which makes thousands, perhaps millions, think
-Lord Byron

Some of them are over at ff.net - I'll find the link for you. It's one of my goals for the summer to get them moved here (and to find the rest of them).

Let's not discuss sugar.. lol But, as a child I would sneak sugar cudes in my backpack in my pockets because I love sugar! It got to the point where my mom tried to hide the sugar from me in our cabinets. Which, when you're like 5 or 6 you're short at least I was so I move the table we had and put the chair on top of it to get to the sugar cubes.! Damit, they were mine and she wasn't going to hide them from me.. lol

Yea, but I don't drink that much coffee like my family I'm surprised there teeth is still white..

You're probably healthier than me AND your dad then by the sounds of it. I'm well aware this much coffee is horrible for a person.

But I've been drinking coffee since I was six. I used to sneak instant coffee (with LOADS of sugar to make it taste better) while playing Tea Party with my sister. I was the person who, when watching Gilmore Girls, though their coffee intake was perfectly normal. LOL.

I'll be in one of the Skyboxes, so I doubt I'll catch a foul ball. But it should be a lot of fun! I've only been to one game this year so far, so I'm really looking forward to it.

Is it seriously the last year for Yankee Stadium? That's sad.

And I would say I can't believe you just called me out, but well, I can. I promise to work on it! Have you wondered over to The Road To Nowhere yet? Check it out if you haven't. I will be posting anything new I write there first and then at my own site.

Last year at Yankee Stadium. I try and see my Yanks a couple times at year in Toronto, since it's closer. I've yet to be at Yankee Stadium. I had tickets, for the Sept 11, 2001 night game, but obviously that one was cancelled. And then I got stuck in NYC for four days... And I've been back but never to a game. I'm determined to go this season though.

Good game tonight :P Your team put up a good fight at the end!

I can't for the life of me drink "hot" coffee just an iced latte which is weird when you think about. I have already gotten in-trouble twice reading fan-fic and blamed it on"coffee"! hehe So, I had to stop reading at work, otherwise, I'd be in some serious trouble and my boss is mean!

Although, I've known him for some time but working for him is something different than being friends with him.. image He is an extreme strict to the T boss when he walks by we all run to are places, because, we know if he see's us we're in for some trouble. lol

I'd die without coffee. Hot or cold. Doesn't matter as long as I get about 7 cups a day.

    Otherwise I'm a total bear.

You'll be at the game tonigiht?! How excited! Catch a foul ball!

A friend of mine won All Star Game tickets when went to the Superbowl and particiapted in a pool. I'm debating just how far I'll go to convince him to give ME the tickets, since it's the last year of Yankee Stadium.

    Oy...
